Life#
Born in Thessaloniki (Selanik) in 1890/91 (AH 1308), Mustafa Arif Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Mustafa Arif also wrote French as well as Turkish and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Mustafa Arif began work in Thessaloniki in 1904/05, at about 14, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. From the first annual entry, for 1905/06, to 1908/09, every annual entry places Mustafa Arif in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in Thessaloniki, the birthplace.
