Life#
Hüseyin Avni Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1882/83 (AH 1300), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, and the father's occupation was "BasMurettip". Schooling took 12 years, at Darüşşafaka, the school for orphans in Istanbul; Hüseyin Avni also attended the telegraph school. In all Hüseyin Avni knew four languages, Arabic, French, Persian and Turkish, all in writing; fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,211 officials knew as many.
At about 23, in 1906/07, Hüseyin Avni began work in Thessaloniki (Selanik), paid from the start, on 400 kuruş a month. Every annual entry from 1906/07 to 1910/11 places Hüseyin Avni in Thessaloniki, first as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), from 1910/11 as Meabir Memuru.
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1906/07 to 500 in 1909/10, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Thessaloniki, when half the paid officials earned less. That salary was paid for a single year, and the next list gives 400 kuruş. The last annual entry is for 1910/11.
