Life#
Kemal Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1882/83 (AH 1300), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, and the father's occupation was "orman memuru". Schooling took 12 years, at Darüşşafaka, the school for orphans in Istanbul; Kemal also attended the telegraph school, wrote French as well as Turkish and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Kemal began work in Istanbul in 1903/04, at about 20, paid from the start, on 400 kuruş a month. Every annual entry from 1903/04 to 1906/07 places Kemal in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in Thessaloniki (Selanik).
Pay rose from 480 kuruş a month in 1903/04 to a peak of 500 in 1906/07, as Muhabere Memuru in Thessaloniki, when 51 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1906/07.
