Life#
Mehmet Sadullah Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1853/54 (AH 1270), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took four years, at a Greek Orthodox school (Rum Mektebi).
At about 23, in 1877/78, Mehmet Sadullah began work in Edirne, paid from the start, on 400 kuruş a month. The annual lists begin in 1877/78, with Mehmet Sadullah as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Edirne. Mehmet Sadullah then moved to Samsun and Yozgat from 1878 to 1889. For 1881 to 1888 the lists have no entry. From 1889 to 1907 the annual entries place Mehmet Sadullah in Istanbul, the birthplace. Of the 775 officials whose entries span 30 years or more, fewer than 7 per cent kept one title throughout.
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1877/78 to 1,650 in 1905/06, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Istanbul, when 95 per cent of paid officials earned less.
