Life#
Mehmed Hurşid Efendi was born in Kafkasya in 1857/58 (AH 1274), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Mehmed Hurşid also attended the telegraph school.
Mehmed Hurşid began work in Istanbul in 1876/77, at about 18, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1877/78, places Mehmed Hurşid in Edirne as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The annual lists then follow Mehmed Hurşid to Istanbul, Serres (Siroz), Parga, Gjirokastër (Ergiri) and Ioannina (Yanya), five places in nine years, with a rise to official (Memur) in 1878. From 1886 to 1898 every annual entry places Mehmed Hurşid in Serandoz, with a rise to director of the second grade (2. Müdür).
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1877/78 to 800 in 1886/87, the peak, as 2. Müdür in Serandoz, when 77 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 21 years of salary come to 158,880 kuruş, 1.2 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1897/98.
