Life#
Born in Antakya in 1858/59 (AH 1275), Mustafa Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). At about 16, in 1875/76, Mustafa began work in Damascus (Şam), with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 1,000 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1878, with Mustafa as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Al Hudaydah (Hudeyde). Next came Taiz and Minchail from 1879 to 1883, then Az Zaydiyah (Zeydiye) from 1883 to 1889. From 1889 to 1907 every annual entry places Mustafa in Abha, first as 2. Müdür, from 1899/1900 as a director of the first grade (1. Müdür). Taiz, about 2,650 km from Antakya, was the post farthest from the birthplace; fewer than 4 per cent of the 5,162 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from home.
The salary went from 1,000 kuruş a month in 1878 to 1,500 in 1899/1900, the peak, as 1. Müdür in Abha, when 94 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over the years with a salary, pay stood on average in the top 10.9 per cent of each year's paid officials, a standing reached by fewer than 3 per cent of the 3,805 officials paid for five years or more.
