Life#
Born in İnebolu in 1858/59 (AH 1275) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Ali Rıza Efendi was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). Ali Rıza had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 16, in 1875/76, Ali Rıza began work in the telegraph service (Telgraf) in Istanbul, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 100 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1878, places Ali Rıza in Istanbul as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1879/80. Next came Pljevlja (Taşlıca) from 1888 to 1895, with a rise to Muhabere Memuru and to director of the third grade (3. Müdür) in 1893/94. For 1881 to 1888 the lists have no entry. The annual lists then follow Ali Rıza to Berat from 1895 to 1898. The last posts were in Kosova from 1899 to 1905.
Pay rose from 100 kuruş a month in 1878 to a peak of 650 in 1893/94, as 3. Müdür in Pljevlja, when 72 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 20 years the salaries add up to 114,660 kuruş, about what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1904/05.
