Life#
Mehmed Mustafa Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1867/68 (AH 1284) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took 12 years, at Darüşşafaka, the school for orphans in Istanbul; Mehmed Mustafa also attended the telegraph school and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 16, in 1883/84, Mehmed Mustafa began work in Istanbul, paid from the start, on 150 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1883/84, places Mehmed Mustafa in Beyoğlu as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The annual lists then follow Mehmed Mustafa to Ordu from 1885 to 1887, then Kosova from 1888 to 1894. Mehmed Mustafa then moved to Pljevlja (Taşlıca) from 1894 to 1903, with a rise to director of the second grade (2. Müdür). The last posts were in Beyoğlu again from 1905 to 1907.
Pay rose from 150 kuruş a month in 1883/84 to a peak of 800 in 1894/95, as 2. Müdür in Pljevlja, when 81 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1906/07.
