Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1867/68 (AH 1284) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Ahmet Nazif Efendi was the child of a telegraph official (telgraf memuru). Ahmet Nazif had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Work began in Istanbul in 1889/90, at about 22, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1891/92, with Ahmet Nazif as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Çorlu. Next came Lüleburgaz in 1892/93 and Babaeski in 1893/94, then Zlatograd (Darıdere) from 1894 to 1904, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür). The last post was in Kardzhali (Kırcaali) in 1904/05.
Pay rose from 300 kuruş a month in 1891/92 to a peak of 500 in 1894/95, as 3. Müdür in Zlatograd, when 46 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1904/05.
