Life#
Born in Kırşehir in 1868/69 (AH 1285) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Mehmet Sait Efendi was the child of an army captain (yüzbaşı). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Mehmet Sait began work in Kastamonu in 1887/88, at about 19, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 285 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1891/92, places Mehmet Sait in Kastamonu as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1894/95. Mehmet Sait then moved to Diyarbakır from 1895 to 1902. The last post was in Kozlu in 1902/03, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür).
The salary went from 285 kuruş a month in 1891/92 to 500 in 1902/03, the peak, as 3. Müdür in Kozlu, when half the paid officials earned less. In all, 12 years of salary come to 53,280 kuruş, 74 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1902/03.
