Life#
Hafız Mehmet Efendi was born in Konya in 1868/69 (AH 1285) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Mehmet began work in Istanbul in 1887/88, at about 19, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1891/92, with Mehmet as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Ivaylovgrad (Ortaköy). Mehmet then moved to Sivas from 1893 to 1905. The last post was in Ladik in 1905/06.
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1891/92 to 560 in 1902/03, the peak, as Basmudur Kitabeti Vekili in Sivas, when two in three paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1905/06.
