Life#
Born in Konya in 1866/67 (AH 1283), Bekir Sıtkı Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was an army captain (yüzbaşı). Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Work began in Konya in 1882/83, at about 16, with seven unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. So long an unpaid start was rare; fewer than 6 per cent of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship worked unpaid for seven years or longer. Every annual entry from 1889/90 to 1904/05 places Bekir Sıtkı in the same post, registry clerk (Mukayyit), in Konya, the birthplace.
The salary went from 200 kuruş a month in 1889/90 to 430 in 1904/05, the peak, as Mukayyit in Konya, when 47 per cent of paid officials earned less.
