Life#
Abdurrahman Faik Bey was born in Shkodër (İşkodra) in 1866/67 (AH 1283), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Abdurrahman Faik began work in the telegraph service (Telgraf) in Tirana (Tiran) in 1878, at about 12, with six unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 120 kuruş. Few began so young; fewer than 3 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known started at 12 or younger. The annual lists begin in 1883/84, with Abdurrahman Faik in the Nufus Kalemi in Tirana. Next came a return to Shkodër, the birthplace, from 1884 to 1887, with a rise to communications official (Muhabere Memuru), then a return to Tirana from 1892 to 1905. The last post was in Lusna in 1905/06, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür).
The salary went from 120 kuruş a month in 1883/84 to 500 in 1905/06, the peak, as 3. Müdür in Lusna, when half the paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1905/06.
