Life#
Born in Elbasan (İlbasan) in 1856/57 (AH 1273), Hüseyin Hüsnü Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Hüseyin Hüsnü had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 18, in 1875/76, Hüseyin Hüsnü began work in Elbasan, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1876/77, with Hüseyin Hüsnü as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Bitola (Manastır). Next came Berat from 1877 to 1880, then Tirana (Tiran) from 1880 to 1885. Hüseyin Hüsnü then moved to Durrës (Dıraç) from 1885 to 1896, with a rise to chief communications official (Başmuhabere Memuru) in 1888/89. The last posts were in Tamras in 1896/97 and Kir in 1897/98 and Durrës again from 1898 to 1900.
The salary went from 300 kuruş a month in 1876/77 to 600 in 1888/89, the peak, as Başmuhabere Memuru in Durrës, when 58 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 25 years the salaries add up to 146,880 kuruş, about what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1899/1900.
