Life#
Born in Gelibolu in 1862/63 (AH 1279) into the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community, Bogos Efendi was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). Bogos knew five languages, Armenian, French, Greek (Rum), Italian and Turkish, all in writing, a number reached by fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,211 officials.
At about 16, in 1878/79, Bogos began work in Bitola (Manastır), with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 380 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1881/82, places Bogos in Vlorë (Avlonya) as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti), where the entries run to 1883/84. The annual lists then follow Bogos to Durrës (Dıraç) from 1884 to 1890. The last posts were in Mount Athos (Aynaroz) from 1890 to 1893 and Bitola from 1893 to 1895.
Pay rose from 380 kuruş a month in 1881/82 to a peak of 600 in 1882/83, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Vlorë, when 59 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1894/95. An entry in "Sicill-i Ahvâl kayıtlarına göre Gelibolu doğumlu memurlar (1879-1909)" by OSMAN UMUT NAL (2026) probably refers to Bogos, since the name, the birthplace and the archive register and page agree.
