Life#
Kigork Efendi was born in Amasya in 1861/62 (AH 1278) into the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community. Schooling took four years, at an Armenian community school (Ermeni Millet Mektebi); Kigork also wrote Armenian, French and Turkish.
At about 22, in 1883/84, Kigork began work in Thessaloniki (Selanik), with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1884/85, with Kigork as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti) in Thessaloniki, where the entries run to 1887/88. The last posts were in Shkodër (İşkodra) from 1888 to 1893.
Pay rose from 300 kuruş a month in 1884/85 to a peak of 500 in 1891/92, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Shkodër, when 43 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1892/93.
