Life#
Born in Bitola (Manastır) in 1852/53 (AH 1269) into the Greek Orthodox Christian (Rum) community, this official was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). The official had seven years of schooling, at the Senyorler Mektebi. In all the official knew four languages, French, Greek (Rum) and Italian in writing and Turkish in speech; fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,211 officials knew as many.
Work began in Beyoğlu in 1874/75, at about 21, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 175 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1876/77, with the official as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti) in Volos (Golos). The official then moved to Thessaloniki (Selanik) and Edirne from 1877 to 1879. From 1879 to 1901 every annual entry places the official again in Thessaloniki. Fewer than 10 per cent of the 1,586 officials whose entries span 20 years or more kept one title throughout.
Pay rose from 175 kuruş a month in 1876/77 to a peak of 780 in 1887/88, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Thessaloniki, when 76 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 26 years the salaries add up to 200,100 kuruş, 1.2 times what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1900/01.
