Life#
Born in Yambol (Yanbolu) in 1852/53 (AH 1269), Ahmet Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Ahmet had four years of schooling, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Work began in Yambol in 1868/69, at about 16, with eight unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. Of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship, fewer than 4 per cent worked unpaid for eight years or longer. The first annual entry, for 1876/77, places Ahmet in Babaeski (Baba-yı Atik) as a postal official (Posta Memuru), where the entries run to 1886/87. The annual lists then follow Ahmet to Kırklareli from 1887 to 1903. The last post was in Tsarevo (Vasilikoz) in 1903/04.
Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1876/77 to a peak of 475 in 1903/04, as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Tsarevo, when half the paid officials earned less. Over 28 years the salaries add up to 129,300 kuruş, 75 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1903/04.
