Life#
Born in Diyarbakır in 1852/53 (AH 1269), Mehmet Cemil Beyefendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took four years, at a primary school (İbtidai Mektebi).
Work began in the Mektubi Kalemi in Diyarbakır in 1868/69, at about 16, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 50 kuruş. From 1876/77 to 1879/80 every annual entry places Mehmet Cemil in Diyarbakır, the birthplace, first in the office of the corresponding secretary (Mektubi Kalemi), from 1877/78 as a postal official (Posta Memuru) and from 1879/80 as a tithe official (Aşar Memuru).
The salary went from 100 kuruş a month in 1876/77 to 300 in 1877/78, the peak, as Posta Memuru in Diyarbakır, when 8 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over five years the salaries add up to 14,880 kuruş, 43 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1879/80.
