Life#
Mehmet Tahir Efendi was born in Diyarbakır in 1855/56 (AH 1272) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Diyarbakır in 1876/77, at about 20, paid from the start, on 300 kuruş a month. The annual lists begin in 1876/77, with Mehmet Tahir as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Diyarbakır, the birthplace, where the entries run to 1879/80. Mehmet Tahir then moved to Midyat from 1880 to 1884, then back to Diyarbakır from 1884 to 1887. From 1887 to 1905 the annual entries place Mehmet Tahir in Kâhta. Of the 775 officials whose entries span 30 years or more, fewer than 7 per cent kept one title throughout.
