Life#
Born in Diyarbakır in 1872/73 (AH 1289) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Abdulgafur Sırrı Efendi was the child of a merchant (tüccar). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Abdulgafur Sırrı also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Work began in Siverek in 1891/92, at about 19, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 240 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1894/95, with Abdulgafur Sırrı as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Diyarbakır, the birthplace. Abdulgafur Sırrı then moved to Cizre from 1896 to 1899, then back to Diyarbakır from 1899 to 1904. The last posts were in Kâhta from 1904 to 1906, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür).
Pay rose from 240 kuruş a month in 1894/95 to a peak of 500 in 1904/05, as 3. Müdür in Kâhta, when 52 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 12 years of salary come to 47,280 kuruş, 66 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1905/06.
