Life#
Feyzullah Raif Efendi was born in Diyarbakır in 1873/74 (AH 1290) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a clerk (ketebe). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Feyzullah Raif also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Feyzullah Raif began work in Diyarbakır in 1891/92, at about 18, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 240 kuruş. From 1895/96 to 1904/05 every annual entry places Feyzullah Raif in Diyarbakır, the birthplace, first as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), from 1902/03 as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti).
