Life#
Born in Silistra (Silistre) in 1873/74 (AH 1290) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Abdülaziz Efendi was the child of a medrese teacher (müderris). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Abdülaziz also wrote Arabic as well as Turkish.
Work began in Bandırma in 1889/90, at about 16, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 750 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1893/94, with Abdülaziz as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Yemen. Next came Salahora and Larissa (Yenişehir-i Fener) from 1896 to 1899, then Bozkır from 1899 to 1905. For 1905 to 1907 the lists have no entry. In 1907/08 the lists place Abdülaziz in Ordu. Yemen, about 3,600 km from Silistra, was the post farthest from the birthplace; only 15 of the 5,162 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from home.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 750 kuruş a month in 1893/94, as Muhabere Memuru in Yemen, when 76 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 12 years pay ended below where it began, 540 kuruş against 750. The final annual entry is for 1907/08. Abdülaziz probably has an entry in "Sicill-i Ahval defterlerine göre Silistreli devlet memurları" by KEMAL TERLEMEZ (2026) (the name, the birthplace and the archive register and page agree).
