Life#
Dikran Vartanyan Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1873/74 (AH 1290) into the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community. Schooling took four years, at a community school (Millet Mektebi); Dikran Vartanyan also wrote French as well as Turkish.
Dikran Vartanyan began work in Istanbul in 1891/92, at about 18, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 150 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1893/94, places Dikran Vartanyan in Beyoğlu as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti). The last post was in Rethymno (Resmo) in 1895/96.
The salary went from 150 kuruş a month in 1893/94 to 500 in 1895/96, the peak, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Rethymno, when 47 per cent of paid officials earned less.
