Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1874/75 (AH 1291), this official came from the Jewish (Musevi) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took four years, at a community school (Millet Mektebi); the official also wrote French as well as Turkish.
Work began in Istanbul in 1889/90, at about 16, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 50 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1893/94, with the official as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti) in Beyoğlu, where the entries run to 1896/97. Next came Bursa, Bitola (Manastır), Serres (Siroz), Adana and Thessaloniki (Selanik), five places in five years, with a rise to Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in 1902/03. In 1903/04 the lists place the official again in Beyoğlu.
Pay rose from 50 kuruş a month in 1893/94 to a peak of 480 in 1902/03, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Thessaloniki, when 48 per cent of paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 300 kuruş. Over ten years the salaries add up to 32,040 kuruş, 53 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1903/04.
