Life#
Born in Baghdad (Bağdat) in 1874/75 (AH 1291) into the Jewish (Musevi) community, İlyas Şaval was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). İlyas Şaval had four years of schooling, at a community school (Millet Mektebi). In all İlyas Şaval knew four languages, Arabic, English, French and Turkish, all in writing; fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,211 officials knew as many.
At about 17, in 1891/92, İlyas Şaval began work in Baghdad, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 150 kuruş. From 1893/94 to 1900/01 every annual entry places İlyas Şaval in Baghdad, the birthplace, first as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti), from 1898/99 as a travelling postal official (Seyyar Memur).
The salary went from 150 kuruş a month in 1893/94 to 500 in 1898/99, the peak, as Seyyar Memur in Baghdad, when 48 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over eight years the salaries add up to 28,800 kuruş, 60 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1900/01.
