Life#
Mehmet Nuri Efendi was born in Baghdad (Bağdat) in 1874/75 (AH 1291) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a telegraph official (telgraf memuru). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Mehmet Nuri also wrote Arabic as well as Turkish and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 23, in 1897/98, Mehmet Nuri began work in Basra, paid from the start, on 400 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1897/98, places Mehmet Nuri in Basra as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1899/1900. The annual lists then follow Mehmet Nuri to Amarah (Amare) from 1900 to 1903. The last posts were in Basra again from 1903 to 1907.
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1897/98 to 500 in 1903/04, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Basra, when 51 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1906/07.
