Life#
Remzi Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1874/75 (AH 1291) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Fethiye (Meğri) in 1888/89, at about 15, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1891/92, places Remzi in Rhodes (Rodos) as Muvassil, where the entries run to 1894/95. The annual lists then follow Remzi to Chios (Sakız), Beyoğlu, Basra and Al-Faw (Fav), four places in ten years, with a rise to acting director (Müdür Vekili) in 1903/04. The last post was in Al-Faw again in 1905/06, with a rise to Huk Memuru. The farthest post, Al-Faw, lay about 2,100 km from Istanbul, and fewer than 6 per cent of the 5,162 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from the birthplace.
The salary went from 200 kuruş a month in 1891/92 to 1,500 in 1905/06, the peak, as Huk Memuru in Al-Faw, when 93 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1905/06.
