Life#
Born in Baghdad (Bağdat) in 1875/76 (AH 1292), Artanis Hurşit Efendi came from the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community. Artanis Hurşit had four years of schooling, at a community school (Millet Mektebi), and wrote Arabic, French and Turkish.
Work began in Baghdad in 1893/94, at about 18, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1898/99, places Artanis Hurşit in Baghdad, the birthplace, as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). Artanis Hurşit then moved to Basra from 1899 to 1904. The last posts were in Baghdad again from 1904 to 1907.
Pay rose from 200 kuruş a month in 1898/99 to a peak of 350 in 1906/07, as Muhabere Memuru in Baghdad, when 36 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over nine years the salaries add up to 26,040 kuruş, 49 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1906/07.
Places in order of time#
