Life#
Born in Baghdad (Bağdat) in 1875/76 (AH 1292), Menaşe Efendi came from the Jewish (Musevi) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Menaşe had four years of schooling, at a community school (Millet Mektebi).
Work began in Baghdad in 1894/95, at about 19, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 240 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1895/96, with Menaşe as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Basra, where the entries run to 1897/98. The last posts were in Baghdad, the birthplace, from 1898 to 1907, first as Muhabere Memuru, from 1906/07 as a chief official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Başmemuru).
The salary went from 240 kuruş a month in 1895/96 to 450 in 1906/07, the peak, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Başmemuru in Baghdad, when half the paid officials earned less.
