Life#
Hasan Zeki Efendi was born in Erzurum in 1875/76 (AH 1292) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a senior army captain (kolağası). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 18, in 1893/94, Hasan Zeki began work in Bayburt, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1895/96, with Hasan Zeki as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Erzincan, where the entries run to 1898/99. Hasan Zeki then moved to Erzurum in 1899/1900, then Doğubayazıt (Bayezid) from 1900 to 1905. The last post was in Tercan in 1905/06.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 400 kuruş a month in 1895/96, as Muhabere Memuru in Erzincan, when 30 per cent of paid officials earned less. After ten years the salary stood below the first, 380 kuruş against 400. The final annual entry is for 1905/06.
