Life#
Born in Arapgir in 1875/76 (AH 1292), Bekir Sarim Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a clerk (ketebe). Bekir Sarim had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 16, in 1890/91, Bekir Sarim began work in Arapgir, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1895/96, places Bekir Sarim in Damascus (Şam) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The last posts were in Al-Shaykh Maskin (Şeyhmiskin) and Taif from 1897 to 1904 and Arapgir, the birthplace, in 1904/05.
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1895/96 to 800 in 1901/02, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Taif, when 81 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over ten years pay ended where it began, at 400 kuruş. The last annual entry is for 1904/05.
