Life#
İsmail Hakkı Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1873/74 (AH 1290) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Istanbul in 1894/95, at about 21, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1895/96, places İsmail Hakkı in Damascus (Şam) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The annual lists then follow İsmail Hakkı to Domokos in 1897/98, then Ioannina (Yanya) from 1899 to 1905. The last posts were in Salahora in 1905/06 and Of in 1906/07.
Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1895/96 to a peak of 540 in 1906/07, as Muhabere Memuru in Of, when 61 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1906/07.
