Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1873/74 (AH 1290), Ahmet Fuat Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Ahmet Fuat had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Istanbul in 1888/89, at about 16, with six unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1894/95, with Ahmet Fuat as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Geyve. Ahmet Fuat then moved to Pristina (Priştine), Bursa, Mitrovica (Mitroviça) and Bilecik, four places in nine years. The last post was in Medina (Medine) in 1904/05.
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1894/95 to 800 in 1904/05, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Medina, when four in five paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1904/05.
