Life#
Born in Pristina (Priştine) in 1881/82 (AH 1299) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Şaban Efendi was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). Şaban had nine years of schooling, at the School of Industry (Sanayi Mektebi). Few officials studied at the School of Industry (Sanayi Mektebi); only 8 of the 5,146 officials with a school did.
At about 15, in 1896/97, Şaban began work in Mitrovica (Mitroviça), paid from the start, on 150 kuruş a month. The annual lists begin in 1896/97, with Şaban as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Mitrovica, where the entries run to 1903/04. The last posts were in Skopje (Üsküp) from 1905 to 1909.
The salary went from 150 kuruş a month in 1896/97 to 250 in 1906/07, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Skopje, when 15 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 12 years of salary come to 25,800 kuruş, 38 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1908/09. Şaban probably has an entry in "Sicill-i Ahval Defterlerine göre Priştineli memurlar" by ÖMER CAN (2023) (the name, the birthplace and the archive register and page agree).
