Life#
Born in Pasinler (Hasankale) in 1881/82 (AH 1299) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Ali Riza Efendi was the child of an army captain (yüzbaşı). Ali Riza had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 12, in 1893/94, Ali Riza began work in Pasinler, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. Of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known, fewer than 3 per cent started at 12 or younger. The first annual entry, for 1896/97, places Ali Riza in Pasinler, the birthplace, as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). For 1898 to 1900 the lists have no entry. Ali Riza then moved to Eleşkirt, Erzurum, Göynük and Aşkale, four places in four years. The last post was in Anah (Ane) in 1905/06, with a rise to official (Memur).
The salary went from 300 kuruş a month in 1896/97 to 800 in 1905/06, the peak, as Memur in Anah, when 78 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1905/06.
