Life

Born in Thessaloniki (Selanik) in 1881/82 (AH 1299), Abdülhalim Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was an army major (binbaşı). Abdülhalim had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), and wrote French, Greek (Rum) and Turkish.

At about 19, in 1901/02, Abdülhalim began work in Argos Orestiko (Hurpişte), with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1904/05, places Abdülhalim in Skopje (Üsküp) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The last posts were in Mitrovica in 1905/06 and Korçë (Görice) in 1906/07.

Pay rose from 250 kuruş a month in 1904/05 to a peak of 300 in 1906/07, as Muhabere Memuru in Korçë, when one in four paid officials earned less. Over three years the salaries add up to 10,020 kuruş, 60 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1906/07.
