Life

Born in Thessaloniki (Selanik) in 1881/82 (AH 1299) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Ahmet Ziya Efendi was the child of an army major (binbaşı). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Ahmet Ziya also wrote French, Greek (Rum) and Turkish.

Ahmet Ziya began work in Argos Orestiko (Hurpişte) in 1901/02, at about 19, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1904/05, with Ahmet Ziya as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Skopje (Üsküp). The last posts were in Mitrovica in 1905/06 and Korçë (Görice) in 1906/07.

Pay rose from 250 kuruş a month in 1904/05 to a peak of 300 in 1906/07, as Muhabere Memuru in Korçë, when one in four paid officials earned less. Over three years the salaries add up to 10,020 kuruş, 60 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1906/07.
