Life#
Hamit Hamdi Efendi was born in Thessaloniki (Selanik) in 1881/82 (AH 1299) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took nine years, at a preparatory secondary school (İdadi Mektebi).
At about 19, in 1901/02, Hamit Hamdi began work in Edirne, paid from the start, on 150 kuruş a month. The annual lists begin in 1901/02, with Hamit Hamdi as Musillik in Edirne, where the entries run to 1903/04. The last posts were in Babaeski (Baba-yı Atik) from 1904 to 1908 and Serres (Siroz) in 1908/09.
