Life#
İbrahim Edhem Efendi was born in Bitola (Manastır) in 1856/57 (AH 1273), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi); İbrahim Edhem also attended the telegraph school.
İbrahim Edhem began work in Istanbul in 1870/71, at about 14, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1872/73, with İbrahim Edhem as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Tuzla. Next came a return to Bitola, the birthplace, from 1873 to 1875, then eight places in 18 years, with a rise to director of the second grade (2. Müdür) in 1882/83 and to assistant inspector (Müfettiş Muavini) in 1890/91. İbrahim Edhem then moved back to Bitola from 1892 to 1896. The last posts were in Edirne from 1896 to 1904. Few officials served in as many places; fewer than 3 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service did.
Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1872/73 to a peak of 1,200 in 1890/91, as Müfettiş Muavini in Kosova, when nine in ten paid officials earned less. In all, 31 years of salary come to 344,880 kuruş, 1.8 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1903/04.
