Life#
Ömer Faik Bey was born in Istanbul in 1856/57 (AH 1273) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Ömer Faik also attended the telegraph school.
Ömer Faik began work in Istanbul in 1871/72, at about 15, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 120 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1872/73, places Ömer Faik in Istanbul, the birthplace, as an official (Memur), where the entries run to 1874/75. Next came Kastamonu, Çerkeş and Safranbolu from 1875 to 1881, with a rise to communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in 1875/76. The last post was in İnebolu in 1881/82.
Pay rose from 120 kuruş a month in 1872/73 to a peak of 600 in 1878, as Muhabere Memuru in Çerkeş, when 46 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1881/82.
