Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1854/55 (AH 1271) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, İsmail Hakkı Efendi was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). İsmail Hakkı had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), and attended the telegraph school as well.
Work began in Istanbul in 1872/73, at about 17, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 30 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1872/73 to 1905/06 places İsmail Hakkı in Istanbul, the birthplace, with four changes of title, from Mulazemet to accounts office (Muhasebe Kalemi) in 1903/04. A career like this is rare; 11 per cent of the 775 officials whose entries span 30 years or more stayed in one place throughout.
The salary went from 30 kuruş a month in 1872/73 to 790 in 1904/05, the peak, in the Muhasebe Kalemi in Istanbul, when four in five paid officials earned less. Over 35 years the salaries add up to 222,300 kuruş, about what an official on the median salary earned.
