Life

Born in Istanbul in 1854/55 (AH 1271), Antuvan Efendi came from the Christian (Hristiyan) community, French (Fransiz) by nationality. Schooling took seven years, at the Makrikoy Fransiz Mektebinde; Antuvan also wrote French and Italian. Of the 5,146 officials with a school, no other studied at Makrikoy Fransiz Mektebinde.

At about 24, in 1878/79, Antuvan began work in Istanbul, paid from the start, on 250 kuruş a month. From the first annual entry, for 1878/79, to 1881/82, every annual entry places Antuvan in the same post, Sehir Posta Memuru, in Bakırköy.

The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 250 kuruş a month in 1878/79, as Sehir Posta Memuru in Bakırköy, when 7 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, four years of salary come to 11,400 kuruş, 45 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1881/82. Antuvan probably has an entry in "Sicill-i Ahvâl defterlerine göre Osmanlı bürokrasisinde İstanbul doğumlu Yahudi ve ..." by AHMET SÜRMEN (2011) (the name and the birthplace agree).
