Life#
Born in Veliko Tarnovo (Tırnova) in 1854/55 (AH 1271), this official came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tax farmer (mültezim). The official had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi). In all the official knew six languages, Turkish in writing and Bulgarian, French, Greek (Rum), Italian and Russian in speech; 8 of the 5,211 officials knew as many.
The official began work in Veliko Tarnovo in 1868/69, at about 14, with 11 unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. Of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship, 31 worked unpaid for 11 years or longer. The first annual entry, for 1878/79, places the official in Thessaloniki (Selanik) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1880/81. The official then moved to Misir, Louros (Loros) and Ioannina (Yanya) from 1881 to 1885, with a rise to travelling postal official (Seyyar Memur) in 1881/82. From 1885 to 1897 the annual entries place the official in Çatalca.
Pay rose from 200 kuruş a month in 1878/79 to a peak of 1,000 in 1881/82, as Seyyar Memur in Misir, when 84 per cent of paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 600 kuruş. The last annual entry is for 1896/97.
