Life#
Born in Çatalca in 1867/68 (AH 1284) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Hafız Ahmet Efendi was the child of a telegraph official (telgraf memuru). Ahmet had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 17, in 1884/85, Ahmet began work in Çatalca, paid from the start, on 200 kuruş a month. Every annual entry from 1884/85 to 1889/90 places Ahmet in the same post, transport official (Nakliye Memuru), in Çatalca, the birthplace.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 200 kuruş a month in 1884/85, as Nakliye Memuru in Çatalca, when 3 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over six years the salaries add up to 14,400 kuruş, 40 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1889/90.
