Life#
Mehmet Ali Efendi was born in Lüleburgaz in 1832/33 (AH 1248) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 33, in 1865/66, Mehmet Ali began work in Vize, paid from the start, on 350 kuruş a month. Of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known, fewer than 3 per cent started at 33 or older. The annual lists begin in 1882/83, with Mehmet Ali as a transport official (Nakliye Memuru) in Babaeski (Baba-yı Atik), where the entries run to 1893/94. The last post was in Lüleburgaz, the birthplace, in 1895/96.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 300 kuruş a month in 1882/83, as Nakliye Memuru in Babaeski, when 11 per cent of paid officials earned less.
