Life#
Born in Pristina (Priştine) in 1850/51 (AH 1267), İbrahim Ethem Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. İbrahim Ethem had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), and wrote Turkish and spoke Italian.
At about 29, in 1879/80, İbrahim Ethem began work in Shkodër (İşkodra), with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. Fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known began work at 29 or older. The annual lists begin in 1882/83, with İbrahim Ethem as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Peshkopi (Debre-i Zir). Next came Bitola (Manastır) and Sjenica (Seniçe) from 1883 to 1887, then a return to Pristina, the birthplace, from 1887 to 1890. The last posts were in Edirne from 1890 to 1894 and Xanthi (İskeçe) from 1894 to 1896.
Pay rose from 300 kuruş a month in 1882/83 to a peak of 400 in 1890/91, as Muhabere Memuru in Edirne, when 28 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 14 years the salaries add up to 57,600 kuruş, 68 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1895/96.
