Life#
Mehmet Behzat Efendi was born in Pristina (Priştine) in 1866/67 (AH 1283) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a clerk (ketebe). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Pristina in 1881/82, at about 16, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 285 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1884/85, places Mehmet Behzat in Prizren as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1887/88. Mehmet Behzat then moved back to Pristina, the birthplace, from 1888 to 1891, then Skopje (Üsküp) and Kriva Palanka (Eğri Palanka) from 1891 to 1895, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür) in 1894/95. Next came Gostivar from 1895 to 1906. The last post was in Jozelitce in 1906/07.
The salary went from 285 kuruş a month in 1884/85 to 600 in 1906/07, the peak, as 3. Müdür in Jozelitce, when 65 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 23 years of salary come to 120,240 kuruş, 88 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1906/07. An entry in "Sicill-i Ahval Defterlerine göre Priştineli memurlar" by ÖMER CAN (2023) probably refers to Mehmet Behzat, since the name, the birthplace, the archive register and page and a place of service agree.
