Life#
Resul Sıtkı Efendi was born in Bitlis in 1846/47 (AH 1263) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Work began in Bitlis in 1867/68, at about 20, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 100 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1868/69, places Resul Sıtkı in Mosul (Musul) as a sergeant (Çavuş), where the entries run to 1882/83, with a rise to communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in 1875/76. Next came Tercan in 1883/84, then Erciş from 1884 to 1892. The annual lists then follow Resul Sıtkı to Ahlat from 1892 to 1903, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür). The last posts were in Adilcevaz from 1903 to 1907. Entries spanning 40 years are rare, reached by fewer than 4 per cent of the 5,211 officials.
The salary went from 100 kuruş a month in 1868/69 to 600 in 1892/93, the peak, as 3. Müdür in Ahlat, when 59 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 40 years the salaries add up to 207,420 kuruş, 83 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1906/07.
