Life#
İbrahim Fikri Efendi was born in Bitlis in 1864/65 (AH 1281) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Work began in Bitlis in 1879/80, at about 16, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 380 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1883/84, with İbrahim Fikri as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Bitlis, the birthplace, where the entries run to 1889/90. Next came Muş and Gaziantep (Antep) from 1890 to 1894, then Adilcevaz from 1895 to 1901. From 1901 to 1903 the annual entries place İbrahim Fikri in Argonat.
Pay rose from 380 kuruş a month in 1883/84 to a peak of 500 in 1891/92, as Muhabere Memuru in Gaziantep, when 43 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 20 years the salaries add up to 108,480 kuruş, about what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1902/03.
